Pinxton 1-7 Sutton Tn AFC (Floodlit Cup)

Tuesday 6th March 2012 -- kick off 7:47pm

Now there's a scoreline that was totally unexpected!!  Pinxton and Sutton  lie 4th and 5th respectively in the CML South Division, both on 43 points, so a tight game was predicted......but with the home team failing to get out of first gear, their Nottinghamshire neighbours put them to the sword, and then some!

Another cold March night that wasn't conducive for copious notes - but I did manage to jot down the scorers and goal times.

The game was fairly for the first 20 minutes or so, and even when CRAIG MITCHELL beat Pinxton keeper Dave O'Hare from the edge of the box on 21, Kieran DeBrouwer almost levelled seconds after the restart. Unfortunately for "Keano" his fierce drive crashed off the bar when it looked a goal all the way.

The Pinxton keeper miscued a clearance on 28 and the ball went straight to Sutton no. 9 JASON EDWARDS, who calmly chipped the ball in the net to double the Snipes' lead. CHRIS RHODES added the third after 34 minutes had been played, drilling home from 10 yards after the home defence failed to clear.

EDWARDS made it five 2 minutes later, smashing the ball home from the edge of the Pinxton box.  H-T 0-4

Sutton went further ahead with just 3 minutes of the second half played, EDWARDS on target from the spot after a trip in the box that gave Referee Mr. Massey little choice other than to award the penalty.

In the 65th minute, evergreen NATHAN "REG" HOLLINGWORTH tried a pot shot from 30+ yards and much to everyone's surprise the keeper failed to hold on to the ball and let the effort sneak into the net.  Another "should have thrown your cap on it" moment.

Pinxton decided to make a game of it after going 6 down, and opened their account with 5 left to play.  Their no. 12 made a great run into the box and put the ball across the goal line where WAYNE COOKE was on hand to prod home.

Sutton had the final word though, and it was that man EDWARDS again on the score sheet, volleying home superbly at the far post. F-T 1-7

We spent the evening in the company of Brett Marshall, Rob Hornby, Lee Spurr, Tony Squires, Richard Lane, Rob and Caroline Whitehead.  Very good company, and a great result for the Snipes, although what went wrong with the usually strong Pinxton team tonight, only they will know.
