Arnold are doing their level best to survive in the NCEL Premier Division, whilst Carlton are flying high in Evo-Stick Div One South. Carlton were without a regular 1st team keeper, so their Academy no. 1, Lewis Cooke was between the sticks. Arnold had NO keeper at all and one of their outfield players donned the gloves.
As usual it was very cold at the Eagle Valley -- a bitter wind sweeping up the pitch meant that we took shelter behind the bottom goal, using the fencing as a wind-break.
Nine goals, but I only took a few notes - Kev was busy tweeting throughout the game....follow him on twitter @daftladnextdoor
The game was only 36 seconds old when ANTHONY GRIFFITHS JNR volleyed past the Arnold stand in keeper from the edge of the box. In the 3rd minute, a free-kick from the right was headed powerfully home at the far stick by MATT MILLNS to double the Millers' lead.
Three minutes later, Willis Francis appeared to handle in the box, and despite his protestations, the Ref awarded Carlton a penalty which GRIFFITHS JNR duly despatched. I think a regular keeper would have saved the tame effort - the keeper seemed to dive over the ball - but at least he guessed the right way!
A bit of a lull in proceedings until the 20th minute when LUKE SMITHSON fired home for the Eagles - tapping home after Cooke had failed to hold onto a shot. Carlton restored their three goal lead just seconds later, ASHLEY GRAYSON prodding home from close range.
On 41, WILLIS FRANCIS volleyed home from 15 yards to reduce the home teams arrears, then in added time Arnold's no. 9, RYAN WHITEHURST, rounded Cooke to make it 3-4 at the break.
Had a walk around the perimeter of the pitch during the break, but eye-watering or what?? Returned to our sheltered spot just as the teams came out for the second half, but we needn't have hurried, the goal glut stalled until the 78th minute when Carlton no. 9 SAM McVICAR rose at the far post to head home a well placed free-kick.
4 minutes later, sloppy defending gave TERRY HAWKRIDGE a simple chance to put the result beyond the Eagles, and the winger took full advantage. F-T 3-6
I was handed a couple of old programmes after the game - Derby v Ipswich from 1961 and Huddersfield v Leeds from 1974. I didn't realise until I actually read the Huddersfield one, that this was the final game of the famous "44 days" that Cloughie was in charge at Leeds. Is it valuable? You tell me.....
Admission £5
Programme - didn't see one
Attendance - 60 / 70 -- I have no idea! Acually 102 !
