Saturday 16th July - Teversal tournament final.
Great game to end Teversal's Inaugural Pre-Season tournament. A bit feisty at times, but nothing that Referee Glenn Turner couldn't handle.
Well done Ref! |
When we left Hucknall at 2:25 pm it was pittling it down, but when we entered Stanton Hill, the roads were dry, and as we pulled into the Tevie car park, the place was bathed in glorious sunshine......
Parkgate began this game as clear favourites - Staveley also had a team playing at home to Heanor (they drew 3-3), so their line up was a mix of ressies and U19. Having said that, these were the players who won through to the final, so were there on merit.
Parkgate opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and it was prolific striker NATHAN FORBES-SWINDELLS who stabbed the ball home from 8 yards after it fell kindly to his feet.
The goal didn't appear to phase Staveley too much, and they applied a lot of pressure to try and haul themselves back into the game.

The pressure paid dividends on 34 – SHAUN TUTON closed down Parkgate keeper Aaron Chapman as he was about to clear his area, and this panicked the tall stopper who smashed his intended clearance against the striker. The loose ball flew towards the goal, and Tuton was quick enough to get to it first and prod home from close range. H-T 1-1
Down came the rain – but not for long! We sheltered in the clubhouse during the break, and as the teams came out we hurried to the main stand to seek more shelter. The rain soon abated and much of the second period was played in bright sunshine.
From the restart, it took Parkgate just two minutes to regain the lead. MOM Danny Cardwell fired in a free-kick from the left that was met by big WILL SENIOR, the centre half and skipper rising like a salmon to power home a bullet header.
Will Senior (armband) netted the Parkgate second |
On 63, one of the Parkgate coaching staff got the ball “rate in t’ knackers” as he watched from the technical area. No-one laughed – honest!!!
Should have sat in the dugout!!! |
Parkgate went further ahead on 78 – another powerful header from a left wing cross, this time DANNY MAJOR leaping to beat the defenders.
Wait for it |

Get in there |
It was all over as a contest, but Parkgate kept going forward and added their fourth with just three minutes to go. After neat play down the right, Senior played the ball back to Cardwell who curled a beauty to the far post where JORDAN TURNER was on hand to volley home. F-T 4-1
We stayed for the presentation - unusually for us. We wanted to see the trophies, but more than anything wanted Will Senior to confirm he had scored the second goal – there was a little bit of confusion as Kev Newton had announced that Craig Laight had scored – even though he wasn’t on the pitch at the time….!
Apart from that, I have to congratulate everyone at Teversal for putting on such a well organised tournament. Also, big thanks to the teams that took part. I saw 5 of the 9 games and enjoyed each one thoroughly.
