Kimberley Tn 1-5 Basford Utd

Thursday 1st March 2012 - kick off 7:45pm  --  Phoenix Trophies Floodlit Cup - South

Bottom of the table Kimberley hosted high flying United in a CML cup game - only one outcome on paper, and so it proved.

Arrived at the ground with 10 minutes to spare - already in the clubhouse were Richard "Wanderer" Lane, Brian Dennett, Trev Williams, Paul the Bury fan, Colpic, Mr. Mac and "Leroy" Shinfield.

Ended up with over 50 present, not bad for a minor cup game on a chilly Thursday evening.

The goal fest we expected failed to appear as Kimberley more than matched United. It took until the 20th minute before the visitors made the breakthrough.  AARON HOOTON received the ball on the edge of the box ans curled a beauty into the top corner with Town keeper Simon Dye grasping at thin air.

The lead lasted barely 5 minutes though, much to the surprise of most in attendance.  A ball in from the right found SHAKA MINORS who clipped a superb volley past the Basford keeper from 10 yards.

Parity only lasted until the 34th minute - HOOTON again on target - a delicate flick header after the ball was inadvertently played into his own box by a Kimberley defender.

8 minutes later JARROD WESTCARR scored his first goal for United, firing home after playing a neat one-two with his brother Carl.  CARL WESTCARR grabbed the United fourth just before the break, prodding home after a mad scramble in the area. H-T 1-4

Wandered into the clubhouse at the break, and was kindly handed a programme by Mrs. Critchley. Thanks Pat - I thought I'd missed out.

The second half wasn't much to write home about, both teams struggled to control the ball on the very bobbly pitch. With Basford slipping down a gear or two, they only managed one more goal, a 79th minute penalty scored by AARON HOOTON after he was tripped when advancing on goal.  F-T 1-5

Not a bad game on the whole - £3 to get in, donated programme, excellent company, 6 goals and plenty of banter.  Mention for Ref Barry Polkey - had a good game, but the players made it easy for the old feller!!
