Boots Athletic 4-0 Underwood Villa (NSL1)..

..or tales of Al Murray and George Eastham -- Tuesday 28th February -- kick off 7:30pm

When blog entries begin with ... "or tales of",  it means that Mr. Steve "Retired Bank Manager" Reading was present at pitchside.

An obscure Notts Senior League Division One game - both teams mid-table and neither team breaking any pots ....yet Steve made his way from Spireite land to join me, Kev and over 30 others at the Hucknall Rolls Sports ground.

We have not seen Boots so far this season....they dropped down a division at the end of last season despite winning the Senior Division by a clear 8 points.  I seem to remember the local rag going on about finances and sponsorship etc. but  to go from Senior Division champs to mid table in Division 1, there must have been very good reasons for Boots to take the action they did.
Boots' keeper was christened Al Murray by Mr. Reading - the resemblance was remarkable... but more remarkable was the introduction by Villa late in the second half of a real veteran (old bloke) who was promptly likened (although by looks and appearance only) to former Arsenal player George Eastham ...

Unusually for me, I didn't know one single player on the pitch - Referee Steve Sears was about the only person whose identity I can be 100% sure about.

Boots went ahead on 21, a penalty buried by their no. 9 " BROWNY" after Mr. Sears spotted a handball in the area.  H-T  1-0.  Boots then hit the bar within 10 minutes of the restart,  but they did go further ahead 60 seconds later when a shot from NEIL "MIDO" HAMED was deflected into the net off the leg of the visiting no. 6.

The best move of the game saw the home team increase their lead in the 67th minute - full back Craig Jones raced forward ( and he's a big lad!), swapping passes with "Mido" before the ball found "BROWNY" who fired home from the edge of the box.
"Mido"

MIDO fired in the home teams fourth with a minute to play -- a ball in from the right sailed straight across the face of the goal the no. 8 smashed it past the Villa keeper who had to be pleased he got nothing on it .....it was a ferocious rocket shot that would have took him into the net as well !!! F-T 4-0

Basford Utd 2-2 Pinxton (CMLS)

Saturday 25th February -- kick off 3:01pm

Pinxton had to win this game to keep their slim hopes of the League title alive - and they were so, so close - only finally succumbing to intense Basford pressure in second half added time. A draw at Greenwich Avenue is a very creditable result as Basford are still unbeaten at home in the league, but it must feel like a defeat for the Pinxton lads.

The first half saw Pinxton outplay their hosts in every area of the pitch, and they took a deserved 2-0 lead into the changing rooms at the break.
KIERON DEBROUWER netted the first for Pinxton on 6 after he was fed from the right, the no. 11 controlled superbly before turning and firing past Curtis McDonald and into the roof of the net.

Basford offered hardly anything in return, and Pinxton doubled their lead with 20 minutes played. JAY COOPER was allowed too much space in front of goal,  and when he was picked out the youngster calmly rounded McDonald before rolling the ball into the net.

Jarrod Westcarr had arguably Basford's best chance of the half on the half hour, but after Courteney Hastings found him unmarked at the far post, the winger blazed hopelessly over the bar.

Pinxton's Joe Riley saw yellow in the 33rd minute - an offence that neither Kev or me saw, but that Referee Aidan Coleman did ... and the booking prompted Joe's Uncle Richard to remark about his nephew's regular contribution to F.A. funds!!  H-T 0-2
Basford had a chance to reduce their deficit within 90 seconds of the restart, but the ball was cleared off the line after a mad scramble in the Pinxton 6 yard box.  The home team did claw a goal back on 52 through AARON HOOTON, the half time sub somehow poking the ball into the net from the foot of the post after Greg Marriott had failed to clear.
Pinxton had very few chances in the second half as Basford applied more and more pressure, but they should have gone further ahead in the 73rd minute, but no-one was able to connect with a well placed DeBrouwer free-kick fired in at the far post.
Wayne Cooke then tried a spectacular overhead kick on 77, but the acrobatic effort flew well over McDonalds' goal.  United's pressure finally told in stoppage time. Pinxton keeper Scott Whittingham had had a very good debut game, but his mis-kick in the first extra minute flew to a Basford foot. He was given a chance to make amends when the ball was deflected  back to him, but the keeper slashed at it wildly and sliced it out for a corner.

United keeper McDonald entered into the fray, and his presence in the 6 yard box appeared to unsettle the visiting team. When Jarrod Westcarr fired in the corner, the ball was apparently handled by a Pinxton player - too far away and too crowded for us to see who was the guilty party, but Mr. Coleman was in no doubt about the offence and duly awarded the penalty that DARREN GARMSTON calmly fired past Whittingham.  Goal timed at 90 + 4 minutes. F-T 2-2

Arnold Tn 3-6 Carlton Tn (Senior Cup)

Tuesday 21st February - kick off 7:45pm

Arnold are doing their level best to survive in the NCEL Premier Division, whilst Carlton are flying high in Evo-Stick Div One South.   Carlton were without a regular 1st team keeper, so their Academy no. 1, Lewis Cooke was between the sticks.  Arnold had NO keeper at all and one of their outfield players donned the gloves.

As usual it was very cold at the Eagle Valley -- a bitter wind sweeping up the pitch meant that we took shelter behind the bottom goal, using the fencing as a wind-break.

Nine goals, but I only took a few notes - Kev was busy tweeting throughout the game....follow him on twitter @daftladnextdoor

The game was only 36 seconds old when ANTHONY GRIFFITHS JNR volleyed past the Arnold stand in keeper from the edge of the box. In the 3rd minute, a free-kick from the right was headed powerfully home at the far stick by MATT MILLNS to double the Millers' lead.

Three minutes later, Willis Francis appeared to handle in the box, and despite his protestations, the Ref awarded Carlton a penalty which GRIFFITHS JNR duly despatched. I think a regular keeper would have saved the tame effort - the keeper seemed to dive over the ball - but at least he guessed the right way!

A bit of a lull in proceedings until the 20th minute when LUKE SMITHSON fired home for the Eagles - tapping home after Cooke had failed to hold onto a shot.  Carlton restored their three goal lead just seconds later, ASHLEY GRAYSON prodding home from close range.

On 41, WILLIS FRANCIS volleyed home from 15 yards to reduce the home teams arrears, then in added time Arnold's no. 9, RYAN WHITEHURST, rounded Cooke to make it 3-4 at the break.

Had a walk around the perimeter of the pitch during the break, but eye-watering or what??  Returned to our sheltered spot just as the teams came out for the second half, but we needn't have hurried, the goal glut stalled until the 78th minute when Carlton no. 9 SAM McVICAR rose at the far post to head home a well placed free-kick.

4 minutes later, sloppy defending gave TERRY HAWKRIDGE a simple chance to put the result beyond the Eagles, and the winger took full advantage.  F-T 3-6

I was handed a couple of old programmes after the game - Derby v Ipswich from 1961 and Huddersfield v Leeds from 1974.  I didn't realise until I actually read the Huddersfield one, that this was the final game of the famous "44 days" that Cloughie was in charge at Leeds.  Is it valuable? You tell me.....

Heanor Tn 4-3 Oadby Tn (EMCL)

Saturday 18th February - kick off 3:01 pm

This was top v third and both teams did the league proud.  Though there would be a few more in attendance, but it was a bitterly cold afternoon at the Town Ground, despite the bright sunshine.

Grabbed the last programme as we entered the ground - it's usually me that gets the "sorry, just sold the last one" - the bloke behind me got that instead!!

Heanor dropped regular keeper Mark Frost, replacing him with Hadlee Dunn, recently signed from Radcliffe Olympic.  Also starting for the Lions was veteran striker Neil Grayson - at 47 years old Neil has to be one of the oldest players currently on the non-league semi-pro circuit.

Great to see 18 year-old Harry Hawkins taking the middle - Harry may be a bit "height challenged" but as a Referee he seldom has a bad game.  He maybe should have cautioned Oadby's Declan Towers and Elliott Shilliam, but despite being labelled a "homer" by one disgruntled Poacher supporter he got most decisions spot on.  He had to send off Oadby boss Lee Harriman for launching a water bottle into the crowd, but he controlled the game well for such a young man.

In the first half, Oadby played down the slope with the wind at their backs, and almost took the lead on 11 when Matty Piper's shot from the left struck the angle of bar and post. They went close again in the 15th  minute, Stevenson's effort from 20 yards cannoning off the foot of Dunn's right hand post with the keeper well beaten.

The Poachers had the ball in the net 60 seconds later, but Matt Moore was adjudged to have fouled Dunn before he bundled the ball into the net.  Heanor had the odd chance, but in reality Shilliam wasn't over-worked.

The visiting team opened the scoring on the half-hour after Heanor lost the ball on half-way.  The ball was played forward to MATTY PIPER, and the former £3.5 million man ran into the area before calmly slotting past Dunn.  It got even worse for the home team on 37 - Brett Peel shielded the ball on the edge of the area for Dunn to clear, but the keeper's kick was poor. The ball fell to the feet of MATT MOORE some 20 yards out and the no.9 made no mistake, chipping into the empty net.

Piper puts the Poachers ahead

Heanor looked down and out, but were given a life-line with one minute of the half to go.  Jason Foster fired a free-kick into the area and Nico Degirolamo won the initial aerial battle, nodding the ball to Grayson. Grayson nodded towards the goal where DEGIROLAMO was waiting to nod home from close range, despite having his shirt tugged by Shilliam.  H-T 1-2

Degiralomo managed to score even though he was being fouled

Keiran DeBrouwer was disappointed at being replaced late on in the second half, and to be fair to the midfielder he wasn't the worst Heanor player in the first half.  His replacement was Lee Stevenson, and when he was fouled 25 yards from goal, Benger tried his luck from the free-kick, but his tame effort was comfortably collected by Shilliam.  GRAYSON had a shot saved on 49, but the keeper could do nothing to prevent him levelling after 56, the striker superbly heading home a Stef Frost cross.

Grayson heads home

On the hour, Heanor took the lead for the first time in the game.  Clayton slipped as he went to steer the ball to Shilliam on the edge of the box -  the ball rolled invitingly to GARY WEBSTER who had the simple task of firing into the unguarded net.

Dunn made a "camera" save on 74 - well captured by Mr. Goodman!

Moore should have brought Oadby level 5 minutes later,  but after he was picked out 12 yards from goal, he blazed wildly over the bar, over the stand and out of the ground.  I have no idea if Heanor actually retrieved the ball -  I reckon it's currently being tracked by NASA as a new piece of space junk!

Oadby kept pressing for the equaliser, and the pressure paid off with four minutes to go, JERMAINE GORDON turning Lions' skipper Brett Peel before firing across Dunn into the back of the net.  Delight for the visiting fans - but in the 6th minute of added time their delight turned to despair as Heanor snatched the winner - that man DEGIROLAMO on hand in to prod home after Foster's left wing corner had caused all sorts of mayhem in the 6 yard box. F-T 4-3

Thoroughly enjoyable game, although Oadby must feel they'd done enough to earn at least a point from this classic encounter.

Heanor : Dunn, Foster, Austin, Slater, Peel, Degirolamo, Webster, DeBrouwer, Benger, Grayson, Frost S. Subs: Vernon, Royce, Stevenson L, Campbell, Frost M.

Sutton Tn AFC 3-5 Eastwood Tn

Wednesday 15th February 2012 - Notts F.A. Senior Cup R3

Thought there might have been a chance of an upset at the Fieldings as CML Sutton took on Conference North Eastwood. If Jason Edwards had have stayed on the pitch for the whole game, who knows?

As it turned out, the Badgers were just too good for a plucky Sutton team, but it was a close run thing.

Rob Hornby and Trev Williams were the first friends we met as we entered the ground.  Grabbed a word with Eastwood boss John Ramshaw before kick off - and despite his team failing to do the business in the League, he remains cheerful..... and it's always fun to see "Rammers" in action.

Bus mogul Trev Bailey came and stood with us for the first 45 minutes - had a quick word with Referees Scott Mason and Hristo Karaivanov - then to Matty Draper and our good buddy, Scarborough Manager Rudy Funk.

Former Badger James Whitehead is currently on the playing staff at the Fieldings. "Topps" and Eastwood left back Chris Shaw were together at Coronation Park for a few years - and it was interesting to see them go head to head for the whole 90 minutes.

JASON EDWARDS gave the home team a dream start, hammering the ball past Jake Want in the Badgers goal after just 8 minutes.  The lead lasted barely three minutes though, a Shaw corner bundled into the Sutton net by DAVID HAGGERTY.

On 28, the Snipes were reduced to 10 men after Edwards kept out Markell Bailey's effort from the left with his hand.  Edwards had been tracking back to cover after keeper Dale Sheppard made a mess of a clearance. Although with hindsight it would have been a better idea to let the ball go past him, Edwards decide to palm away, giving the Ref no option other than to issue a red card, along with the penalty. MARKELL BAILEY took the kick and netted with ease.

So Eastwood 2-1 up against 10 men -- Rammers still said he wasn't confident of victory, and his fears were realised two minutes later when Eastwood failed to clear, leaving CRAIG MITCHELL free at the far post, and the former Stag had the simple job of tapping home from about a yard out.  With 5 minutes of the half remaining, Shaw fired a blistering effort at the Sutton goal, but Sheppard pulled off a terrific save to deny the left back.  H-T 2-2

The Snipes more than held their own for the first 25 minutes of the second half, but a defensive lapse allowed the ball to fly across the goal, and FRANCIS GREEN was on hand to tap home.  The Badgers were awarded another penalty two minutes later after Craig Charlesworth mistimed his challenge - and that man BAILEY stepped up again to give Eastwood a 2 goal advantage.  BAILEY completed his hat-trick on 82, smashing the ball past Sheppard from the corner of the box. Cracking goal that probably made it worth the fiver entrance fee.   Sutton had the last word though, MITCHELL again "Johnny on the spot", sliding the ball home after Dean Shorts' effort on goal somehow picked out the no. 9 on the far post.  F-T 3-5

Very entertaining game - and although Eastwood are more or less doomed to relegation, there was a fair amount of passion and if Rammers can stabilise his playing staff, they will do well in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

We have seen the top three CML South teams recently, and South Normanton, Basford and Sutton have all showed that they can play. Should be a very interesting end to the season - only one team will be allowed promotion......!!

Programme - £1 -- compared to the Basford one, this effort was really poor

Basford Utd 2-3 Rainworth MW (Senior Cup)

Tuesday 14th February 2012 - Notts F.A. Senior Cup R3

Even though the weather has moderated slightly, it was still a cold night at Greenwich Avenue, the home of  Basford United.

Over 70 brave souls were present, and most of them took advantage of the new stand - made a great wind-break!

Central Midlands South Division (step 7) Basford were hoping to upset Evo-Stik Div 1 South (step 4) opponents, but it was not to be.

Met up with Tony "Come On You Lions!!!" Squires and Brian " Big Issue" Dennett in the car-park. Steve "Retired Bank Manager"  Reading was already in the ground - but also on hand were :- Brett Marshall, Carl Haslam, Deadly Derek, Danny Staley, Gary Hayward, Rob Townsend,  Maurice MacFarland and of course, the inimitable Mr. Gordon Foster.

Had a chat to Blidworth Welfare treasurer Scott Ward - he told me how the changing rooms at the Welfare ground have suffered a burst pipe, which in turn brought down the ceiling. Their scheduled home game v Pinxton this coming Saturday has been switched to Wharf Road.

The game was just 60 seconds old when the home team took a surprise lead.  The ball was fired up field from the kick off, and when it was played into the path of COURTNEY HASTINGS, the no. 9 hammered low and hard past the Rainworth keeper from the edge of the box.

STEVE AKERS levelled for the visitors on 10, firing past Fretwell from 15 yards,  then seconds later BEN SPARGO put the Wrens in the lead from the penalty spot.  Basford tried to regain some control, but most of the action was in their half and only stout defending kept the score manageable.  It was 3-1 with 5 minutes of the first half to play, ANDY TOYNE collecting, turning and firing sweetly past Adam Fretwell in the Basford goal from 15 yards. H-T 1-3

Had a wander around the ground with Steve during the break - there is now hard standing on all four sides of the pitch. With the new entrance gate opened up for the first time for this game, things are shaping up really well at United.  Promotion doesn't appear be a worry, should they win the CML South Division. Getting to the required standard by 31st March looks to be very achievable. Well done to all at Basford.

The second half was a very drab affair, with Rainworth seemingly content to hold what they had, and soak up any pressure the home team applied.   We had to endure a little squeaky bum time near the end of the game when MARTIN HOLT fired hopefully at the Rainworth goal from about 40 yards, and the ball flew over the outstretched arms of the Wrens keeper.  2-3 with only added time to play - surely we weren't about to have another 30 minutes.......thankfully Ref Eddie Pidduck thought 4 minutes was enough and the Evo-Stik team progressed through to the 1/4 finals.

Admission £3
Programme £1 -- very good indeed
