Blidworth Welfare 0-2 Real United

Tuesday 27th December -- kick off 3pm

Made the short trip to Blidworth to see the Welfare lads take on Real United. The game was far from being a classic, but it was interesting, to say the least!

When we talked to Jamie Senior before kick off, he informed us that 4-5 of the regular starters were absent due to Boxing Day over-indulgences! To see long term Blidworth stalwart, keeper Jason Fisher starting up front with Senior was rather strange, but at least Fisher was on the team sheet - which can't be said about the United no. 8!

This unlucky chap was booked by the Ref after just 15 minutes or so, but because his name wasn't on the team sheet he was told to leave the field of play!  Who takes the yellow card, and will pay the fine is a total mystery to me, but I'm sure the League and the F.A. will have come across this before -me and Kev certainly haven't!  A few minutes later, the offending player was handed a triple whammy when he was asked to leave the dugout - he had no right being there is he wasn't on the team sheet!

Referee Mr. Gilvarry got that right, but some of his decisions throughout the game left us scratching our heads and wondering if he came from somewhere that contact wasn't permitted!  Every tackle, every attempted tackle was deemed to be a foul - although having said that, in the 29th minute he did get the decision for the opening goal right.  Welfare keeper Paul Stanhope went to punch a ball in from the left, but took an attacker out, punching the back of his head and not the ball!  Penalty, every day.....

Dalton Stephens confidently put the spot kick to Stanhope's right as he dived the other way.  H-T 0-1

From the restart, Craig Gould almost levelled for the Welfare, but could only find the side netting after making a great run down the left. Stanhope did well to save from the United no. 11 seconds later, then the visiting no. 5 headed just over from a corner. 

Half way through the second period, Stanhope shouted "Malc, what are you doing still coming to watch this?"  My reply was that I couldn't offer a reason - and after several minutes I still couldn't think of a reason!!! The old "it gets you out of the house" standard reply was my only feeble offering!!!

Some comical attempts at goal by the Real forwards meant that the score stayed at one-nil right up until the 85th minute, when a scorching drive from their no. 10 shirt flew past Stanhope, who dived to his left to try and save, but in reality had no chance of getting anywhere near the ball.  F-T 0-2

As we left the ground, Welfare treasurer Scott Ward wished me all the best.....and make no mistake, we will be back at the Welfare . Despite the poor standard today, this is still one of our favourite venues ... don't ask me why, I don't know!!

When Kev let me know he had decided to spend Boxing Day with his family, I settled for spending time with mine, rather than go to a game. Sorry - no match to write about....

Kimberley Tn 2-3 Pinxton (CMLS)

Saturday 17th December 2011 - kick off 3pm

Late change of fixture, and a poor choice by yours truly. This game was not a classic by a long chalk.  Despite the visitors dominating the proceedings, Kimberley could have easily grabbed an unlikely point as the Pinxton players failed to add to a two goal lead against 10 men.

Kimberley had the bare eleven after 5 players let them down, and one or two of them had less than athletic physiques!!  Pinxton were also down to the bare bones - Manager Kenny Shinfield was actually named as one of only two subs...

Ben Moore and Wayne Cooke were Pinxton's two front men - not exactly a towering threat - unless that is, one stood on the other ones shoulders!!!

Kimberley should have gone ahead in the first minute, but poor finishing let the home team down.  Moore had Pinxton's first real chance on 17, crashing a shot against Simon Dye's crossbar.  Dye made a spectacular diving save  from Cooke in the 31st minute, and then repositioned  well to block the same players follow up effort. 

The travellers did take the lead on 35, a Sean Gregory through ball picking out WAYNE COOKE who deftly lifted the ball over Dye as the keeper advanced to the edge of his area.  Kimberley did manage to level just before half time, TRISTAN SPENCER slotting home from 18 yards after a failed pass back by Pinxton midfielder Sean Gregory gifted him the ball.  H-T 1-1

Pinxton looked determined to ease Gregory's anxiety as the second half progressed, and should have restored their lead on 59, but Cooke only managed to hit the bar after he was picked out just 6 yards from goal.   It was only seconds later that they did retake the lead though,  JAMES SENIOR crashing home a terrific effort from 20 yards out.  Keeper Dye had no chance of saving Senior's shot, but he did foil the midfielder a couple of minutes later, saving a fiercely driven free-kick.  Dye reacted well again to keep out Cooke as he raced in to try and force home the loose ball.

In the 66th minute, SAM RAWSON headed an Elliott Jones corner powerfully home at the far post to seemingly make the points safe, but as the Pinxton back line relaxed, COURTNEY BARTLEY raced down the right and fired in an effort that somehow flew past Dave O'Hare in the visitors goal.  A frantic few minutes followed, and even though Kimberley lost a player to an injury, taking them down to 10 men,  they finished the game on the front foot and Pinxton were mightily relieved to hear the final whistle.  F-T 2-3

EMCL leaders Heanor didn't produce the goods when they played St. Andrews and Anstey at the Town Ground recently. They did today! Holbrook had only lost two league games prior to this game, but they have only played 14 games so far, so were in a decent mid-table position. 

On paper this looked a stiff test for the Lions, but in the end it proved to be a well polished display from the home team, and a decent warm up for their upcoming Derbyshire Senior Cup game at Cheaterfield and Tuesday.....

Lee Stevenson replaced the out of form Ryan Cancellara in the Heanor midfield, and with Josh Royce and Stef Frost partnering Nathan  Benger up front, the Lions certainly had plenty of fire power!

The ground was bathed in sunshine as the teams entered the pitch, but the temperature was only just a little above freezing, but with no wind to add any chill factor, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. 

Anyone who visits the Town Ground regularly will know all about the mad kick in that the subs have before the teams take to the field.  Kev and I retrieved balls from the street on our previous visit, and the stand behind the goal has umpteen dints in it - testament to the accuracy of the shooting.......the question is then, given the lack of direction imparted to the balls, how did this net come off it's hooks?   Answers on a postcard please!

The home team took just 10 minutes to take the lead. After neat approach play the ball went wide right and when it was crossed into the box,  STEF FROST was waiting in the middle of the goal to tap in.  Missed the goal pic, but got the celebrations.....

Simon Lillie in the Holbrook net made a couple of cracking saves as Heanor looked to add to the score, and it wasn't until the 36th minute that the visitors conceded again, NATHAN BENGER drilling home from 15 yards after finding room in the area.

Lillie did well to block Benger's effort on 43, but seconds later, JOSH ROYCE fired across the goal from the left and with the help of a deflection the ball ended up in the back of the net. H-T 3-0

The home team netted again on the hour mark, a header from a free-kick in from the right was blocked but not cleared, giving JOSH ROYCE  a shot at goal from close range.  NATHAN BENGER added the home teams fifth in the 64th minute, firing home superbly after running into the Holbrook box.

Holbrook pulled a goal back on 67,  a free-kick from the left headed powerfully home at the far post by DARREN RUSTON. Lions' keeper Mark Frost was left hopelessly exposed as his defence failed to pick up the tall striker. F-T 5-1

Arnold Tn 1-2 Retford Utd (NCELP)

Saturday 3rd December 2011 - kick off 3pm                                                       

Arnold were very unlucky to come away with nothing from this blood and guts encounter at the Eagle Valley.  A combination of poor finishing and last ditch clearances foiled the home team, but the Eagles gave their high flying visitors one heck of a game.

Liam Corrigan was in the Arnold line up after his recent transfer from Retford, while his former team mate Carl Haslam played with a headband to protect a non-football injury!

Kev was Christmas shopping, so I tried my hand at taking a few pics - but it was so cold at the Valley ( again!!), that I only managed a few....

The players were friendly enough pre-kick off, but it soon became apparent there was really no love lost between these two teams.  Arnold had dumped Retford out of the Vase earlier in the season, and were looking for a little bit of payback - and the relative league positions before kick off indicated this should be an away banker. 

ADAM SCOTT duly put the Badgers ahead on 12 minutes, popping a 22 yard free-kick into the top corner, with keeper Martin Kearney a spectator.

  

This fired up the Arnold players and they quickly showed Retford that they were going to have to fight to keep the lead.  Jason Fisher did well to punch away from Liam Garner, and Corey Nightingale did well to keep Joe Wood at bay.

Several chances went begging as the home team pressed forward, but when Danny Hayes tried to be clever and play the ball out of defence instead of putting it out of the ground,  the ball was taken from him and whipped into the area to where Fabian Smith was waiting. Unfortunately for Arnold, the former Badger completely missed his kick, and the ball went safe, much to Hayes' relief.  H-T  0-1

Arnold had another chance to level seconds after the restart, but the chance went begging. As the ball was played out of defence though, CARL HASLAM latched onto it some 30 yards from goal and ran in -on-one with Kearney before slotting just inside the post.

Haslam was then involved in a tussle with  Joe Wood and the centre-back ended up colliding with the perimeter fencing. Despite the other Arnold players protests, Referee Mr. Barney recognised this as just a footballing incident and after a few raised voices and bit of pushing and shoving, order was restored.  Wood was fit to return to play after treatment, but the players all seemed to forget the football for a while and resorted to hacking and kicking each other for a while! 

When Arnold pulled a goal back on 65, things calmed down a bit and Retford concentrated on keeping the now rampant Eagles out. The goal came from the left - the ball across the goal picking out LIAM GARNER who fired back across Fisher and into the net.  Martin Carruthers had a gilt-edged chance with 10 to go, but failed to connect with his head after he was left unmarked in the area.  Mr. Barney added five minutes stoppage time, a five minutes that saw Badger's boss Brett Marshall hopping about and screaming at the Ref to blow his whistle.....F-T 1-2

As I mentioned at the start of this report, Arnold can consider themselves unlucky to have nothing to show for this performance - but if they keep playing like this, there should be no repeat of last season's relegation fight.
