Hucknall Tn 1-2 Grantham Tn (NP1S)

Wednesday 30th November 2011 - kick off 7:45pm

Carlton won 6-0 at Shepshed to take them to the top on the Northern Premier League Division One South - after this victory at Watnall Road,  Grantham move into second place behind the Millers, just two points behind with two games in hand.

Link to table

To say this was the last day of November, it wasn't as cold as expected, although the wind was a bit on the chilly side.  After spending the first 10 minutes or so in the open, we soon relocated to a spot behind the Watnall Road goal - this afforded some respite from the chill, and gave us a chance to catch up with good friend Fred Kirk who was also seeking shelter there.

The Gingerbreads 'keeper Rob Murray made a cracking save in the first minute of the game, and Hucknall looked the better team early doors.  Grantham are one of the form teams in the division, but Hucknall more than matched them for half an hour - then a cross in from the right was met with a fine header from battering ram TONY BATTERSBY. Yellows custodian James Lindley maybe could have made a better effort cutting out the cross, but take nothing away from Battersby, he was given the chance and took it well.  Murray made a cracking fingertip save from a Grant Brindley header - the centre-backs blushes saved and an OG averted. H-T 0-1

Relocated again during the break - decided to have a sit down.  Positioned in front of the press box we had a great view of the proceedings, despite the 6' 12" linesman's occasional efforts at blocking it.  Blimey, he was tall!

A poor challenge on the edge of the box gave Hucknall a free-kick on 75, and ANTHONY GREGORY took full advantage, curling a superb shot past Murray. So well placed was the effort that the keeper never moved as the ball flew into his net.

The home team were on terms for only 6 minutes though, JAMIE McGHEE on hand to tap in from close range after Lindley had superbly saved Paul Grimes' fierce drive. Great save, but no defenders reacted to clear the loose ball, giving the winger the simple chance.  F-T 1-2

Arnold Tn U19 1-3 Handsworth U19 (NM U19)

Monday 28th November 2011 -- kick off 7:45pm

Decided to go to this game even though the weather was a little inclement to say the least!  Eagle Valley was swept by a bitingly cold wind and occasional driving rain! Well done to all the lads for entertaining us so well, despite the conditions.

Spent the game in the company of Keith Parnill and Danny Staley, Kev having decided this game wasn't for him....

PAT LINDLEY put Handsworth ahead in the 10th minute, jumping well to head home a Jack Williams free-kick.   Arnold battled against the wind and  rain in an attempt to pull level, but the visitors defended well and the teams went in for a well deserved cuppa without any change to the score. H-T 0-1

CARTER MPWAYA doubled Handsworth's lead on the hour mark, finishing well after latching onto a ball in from the right. On 75, LUKE BROADBENT made it 0-3 with his first kick of the game after coming off the bench, then 5 minutes later DANNY GORDON hammered a 25 yard free-kick home to give the home team a little reward for their efforts. The young Eagles also hit the post soon after, but the visitors held on and took the points back to Sheffield with them. F-T 1-3

Heanor Tn 2-3 Anstey Nomads (EMCL)

Saturday 26th November 2011 -- kick off 3:04pm

No programme again - the attendance was officially 137, so no surprise the programmes were sold out before we arrived at the Town Ground, even though we were there for 2:45pm.

Blustery conditions were never going to allow the teams to produce good, flowing football, but Nomads coped far better with the wind and looked the far more comfortable team as the game progressed.

Heanor went into the game on top of the league, having gone 14 unbeaten. Nomads were on the back of a 9 game unbeaten run and to be fair, looked the better team. They were very well organised at the back and snuffed out the usually dangerous Heanor attack with some ease.

We decided to position ourselves in the stand behind the top goal, this afforded decent shelter from the biting wind, although my old rheumy eyes do struggle to see the bottom goal.  This becomes even worse when the floodlights are on - the glare adding to the problem!!!

Anstey had the ball in the net on 23 after Lions'  keeper Mark Frost had made a cracking save and the loose ball was tapped home, but the Assistant ref had already flagged for offside.   The visitors did deservedly take the lead 12 minutes later,  Brett Peel's attempted clearance apparently striking the stomach of SIMON ALEXANDER and ending up in the net.

Nathan Benger had a trademark looping header cleared off the line just before the break, but in reality, Nomads' keeper Stefan Joyce had a relatively quiet first half.  H-T 0-1

The second half began with Anstey seeming to have decided to hold on to their advantage, allowing Heanor to drive at them. As mentioned previously though, the visiting defenders gave little away.  On 58, and against the run of play, Anstey actually went further ahead.  Heanor keeper Frost advanced to the edge of his area to clear a hopeful through ball, but right back Jason Foster had the same idea. Unfortunately the players left the ball for each other leaving DARREN TAYLOR the simple task of collecting the ball and walking it into the empty net.

JASON FOSTER redeemed himself somewhat seconds later, looping a 25 yard free-kick past Joyce.  Was the comeback on? Heanor thought so, going four up top, throwing Josh Royce and Stef Frost on to partner Benger and Vernon.  Unfortunately for the Lions, Anstey were up to the challenge and with 5 minutes  to go made the victory theirs. A fierce drive from the left was parried superbly at his near post by Frost - but CHRIS RUSKIN was sniffing three feet from goal and gleefully stabbed home the loose ball.

Heanor striker JAKE VERNON prodded home in stoppage time to give the scoreline some respectability, but in all fairness, the visitors were by far the better team on the day, and were fully deserving of the three points.  Heanor remain at the top of the table, but there are several teams ready and willing to topple them if they can't put this defeat behind them and get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.  F-T 2-3

Teversal 1-5 Pontefract Colliery (NCEL1)

Tuesday 8th November 2011 -- kick off 7:50pm.

Decided to visit Teversal rather than go to the Notts Police v Clifton game - the persistent rain a factor, there is hardly any cover at Calverton, whilst Teversal's ground has ample cover against the elements.

Met up with Tony Squires in the ground - Tony has been getting in quite  few games lately, and it's always a pleasure to be in the young man's company.

What a miserable evening weather wise - we spent the first half in the stand behind the dugouts - not a great view, but at least we were dry. The rain had stopped by the time the second half got underway, so we repositioned to the opposite side of the pitch - uninterrupted view and the opportunity for Mr. Squires to have a bit of banter with the Assistant referee......

Teversal began the game on the front foot, but after 10 minutes or so, Colls began to have more possession, and looked the more threatening.

They went ahead on the half-hour, debutant GARETH ROBERTS climbing highest to head home a Liam Ormsby free kick. Roberts wasn't even on the very  classy  team sheet, his late inclusion announced only as the teams took to the pitch.  H- 0-1

Off for a beverage at the break, very nice apparently and the chips and gravy getting a big thumbs up from Tony.

The home team began the second half as they had the first, and on 68 were level through LIAM WILD, the centre back hammering the ball home after the travellers failed to clear a free-kick into the box.

The parity lasted barely 2 minutes, another scramble, another clearance not made, GREIG McGRORY stabbing home from close range to put the Colls back in front.  On 75, McGRORY grabbed his second after racing onto a through ball from Will Ramsay and calmly slotting past Wilson from the edge of the box.

Ponte added their fourth in the 80th minute, McGrory battled well to keep possession before finding CONNOR ROLLINSON who fired home through a ruck of players.  The scoring was completed two minutes later when LIAM ORMSBY converted from the spot after Referee Mr. Sporne awarded  the Colls a penalty for a trip in the area. F-T 1-5

The scoreline is a bit harsh. Tevie weren't that far apart from the Colls, but poor defending and very tired legs towards the end of the game made the result look a little worse than it should have been.

Pinxton 3-0 Belper United (CMLS)

Saturday 5th November 2011 - kick off 3pm

I almost decided to change our game after the poor effort at Bilborough last week left us feeling we had wasted a Saturday afternoon.  This game certainly restored a little faith in the CMFL, with both teams well matched, and both sets of players working hard and showing plenty of endeavour and ability.

On arriving at the ground, the first thing we saw was a recycle bin in the Welfare car-park was on fire.  They start their Nov 5th celebrations a bit early in Pinxton, don't they?? !!

Pinxton were September's CMFL team of the month, and were presented with a salver pre-kick off. Unfortunately we missed the presentation by Byalan Johnson of CU Phosco Lighting and CML official John Farmer, but managed to persuade Secretary Jane Brookes to pose with the award during the second half.

The game was very even for the first half an hour or so, with plenty of opportunities at both ends. Belper's skipper Tony Hemmings conducting superbly from the middle of the park, and Wayne Cooke proving a real handful for the home team.

Jay Cooper had a decent long range effort on 25 that forced keeper Adam Jablonski to tip over, but it was ELLIOTT JONES who broke the deadlock ten minutes later. The ball was played out of  the home defence, and Jones ran in between two Belper players, reached the ball first and calmly lobbed over the advancing keeper and into the empty net from 35 yards.

Jones was again played in on goal just before the break, but his run forward was halted abruptly by United no. 4 shirt. There were cries of "red ref!!", but the visitors no. 11 was covering and Referee Oliver Bickle had also noted this, quite rightly punishing the offence with just a yellow. H-T 1-0

We were joined at the break by Pinxton midfielder Joe Riley who gave us one or two insights into who is who, and who knows who in the village.  There are teams who have great dressing rooms with superb bonding, and it appears that the Wharf Lane outfit are as close knit as any of them. It was particularly nice to see our good friend Jamie Renshaw back at Pinxton - genuinely nice bloke, very good defender and always good for a laugh or two. Mind you his effort on 85 made everyone in the ground laugh - I don't know if the ball has come down yet, or whether NASA have picked it up on their radar!!

Belper started off the second half on the front foot and on 51, their no. 10 forced a cracking save from Dave O'Hare in the home goal.

The home team were soon in real command though when they added their second soon after.  Jay Cooper made a great run into the box and fired in an effort that Jablonski should have, in all honesty, held on to. He didn't,  and WAYNE COOKE was on hand to prod the loose ball home from two yards. With 65 played, Pinxton netted their third, and the game was effectively over - and what a goal it was!

The ball was played out right to WAYNE COOKE, and it sat up perfect for the no. 10 to volley superbly across Jablonski and into the net.  Absolute stunner, although I have to report that his hat trick effort effort shortly after flew wide the target by at least 20 yards!!! Cooke is not in the sequence of pictures below, but you should be able to judge how good the effort and where the player was from the ball's trajectory!

Pinxton have a lot of faith in their U19 team, and watching some of the players on show in this game you can see why.  Midfielder Greg Marriott began the game, as did right back Corey Hardy.  Cameron Short and Jacob Longden came on halfway through the second period and it was Longden's magnificent goal line clearance on 78 that kept the home teams clean sheet intact.

MOM Wayne Cooke
All in all, a great afternoon at Wharf Road.  Plenty of banter, plenty of good football and as usual, a hell of a lot of fun!!

Admission £3 inc programme
Attendance  - didn't bother with a head count, but have to be 80 or more present. ( 86 apparently).....

Don't usually bother to name MO M, but Wayne Cooke had a belter.....

I mentioned to Kev about the reflection ......
......and after repositioning, Chairman Richard Riley just had to get in on the act!!

Arnold Town 3-2 Staveley MW ( NCELP)

Tuesday 1st November 2011 - kick off 7:45pm

Another visit to the grandly named Eagle Valley - and another evening spent in the company of Steve "retired bank manager" Reading...of course the first topic of conversation was his beloved Manchester City's trouncing of their city neighbours ...

Staveley were the only team in the NCEL Premier division still unbeaten, but a couple of dodgy penalty awards and an OG by keeper Ian Deakin cost them dearly.

A few familiar faces were on show tonight -- Staveley keeper Ian Deakin, Arnold's Callum Mason and Liam Garner from our Eastwood days, and Tris Whitman who we used to enjoy watching at Carlton.

The three officials were all local and all familiar to us as well -  Referee Andy Wood,  along with  Assistants Peter Craggs and Harry Hawkins. The officials took a bit of stick from the Arnold faithful when the home team were struggling to cope with the Staveley attack, but two dubious penalty awards later and Andy was the best thing since powdered milk!

Staveley took the lead on 20, prolific scorer SIMON BARRACLOUGH latching onto a through ball before calmly slotting past Martin Kearney.  That was the only goal of a mostly uneventful half, but the second period more than made up for it. H-T 0-1

With 68 minutes on the clock, Arnold were given the chance to level when a defender was adjudged to have handled in the box. Looked a very harsh decision , as the ball hit the hand as the defender was trying his best to get the offending appendage out of the way.  No problem for JOSH SCHOFIELD from the spot, the sub sending Deakin the wrong way.

The home team went in front in the 76th minute and talk about lucky! Liam Garner saw his powerful header brilliantly saved by Deakin, but the ball fell to Tris Whitman on the line at the near post and he hammered it goalwards. The ball ricocheted off the unlucky Deakin and ended up in the back of the net.

It was 3-1 to the Eagles just 5 minutes later, another penalty converted by JOSH SCHOFIELD after Garner had "deceived" the officials by kicking his markers leg and going down in a heap. Sorry Liam, but that was simulation to the max. Still, Mr. Wood saw it as a foul and had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

KYLE FORBES-CHAMBERS ran through the Arnold defence to slot home on 92, ensuring a squeaky bum finish as Mr. Wood added a further four minutes to the game.  Arnold held out to record a fine win over their classy opponents.  F-T 3-2
