Basford United ( post from CML Unofficial forum)

Looks like Basford United are putting together a really big squad for their upcoming season in the CMFL South Division.

"United's 1st team managers Daz Saunders and Russ Best continue to build what looks a formidable squad with the signing of Martin Holt. A target for many a month Holty will prove a superb signing and will enhance the central midfield area. Holty showed in his appearance against Thoresby what he can bring to the team alongside Josh Niblett. Ryan Johnson - GSB, Courtney Hastings Bulwell FC, Danny Walker GSB and Joe Richardson - Dunkirk have all put pen to paper. Flanker Ryan Johnson is pedigree through and through and has long been admired by Basford for many a season so we are absolutely delighted to get him on board.

Young striker Courtney is also one that has vast talent and one that has obviously been closely monitored by us in recent season playing on our ground for Bulwell. Courtney excelled last season and played in the NSL rep team and this season has looked very lively in training and gave us a new dimension last Sat when he came on for the 1st team at home to Radcliffe Olympic, bagging a brace and creating havoc.

Danny Walker returns to Basford after two seasons away at GSB and possesses great ability and versatility. Sadly he has a big ban but no doubt he will give us a big impact when he returns in the new year. Ben Richardson is another signing that looks very assured and did well when entering the game Sat at left full back. With ex Greenwood defender Ash Harrison looking likely to move to Arnold, Russ and Daz now have good options available for the left back slot.

Basford United are delighted to welcome back former quality players in leader striker Kevin Walker and defender Gary Willows who return to Basford after an excellent double winning season for Boots. Also making the move from Boots are the excellent Ben Moore who excelled at sweeper last season but who can be just as effective in the centre of the park and top rated flanker Tommy Kemp who can give us a real goal threat from the flank.

With another favourite and big character keeper Curtis MacDonald returning to United from GSB then Curtis adds competition to last seasons keeper youngster Matt Simpson who looks likely to be sidelined with a knee problem requiring surgery. Other new signings include top rated full backs Ash Harrison who joins from EMCL Greenwood Meadows as well as Richard Hodgeson who joins from EMCL Heanor Town.

Aaron Jenkins who comes from an excellent Jenkins football family, joins from GSB and other notable signings include flanker Jason Russell who excelled under Daz Saunders during his time as manager for Pelican in previous campaigns, strikers Lee Day - Dunkirk and Jordan Blair - Greenwood and a further defender John Madden who has impressed so far this preseason.

Basford United are pleased to keep hold of most of our key players from last season, and very pleasing that have held off the advances of higher rated clubs to keep hold of our star players Josh Niblett & Tyrone Gray. We are hopeful Skipper Mark Dimech will commit for another season and also delighted that last seasons excellent performers Rusharn Bennett,Damo Rennicks,John Manders, Gary Wright, Craig Macaffrey, Mark Nixon, Robbie England, Ciaron Gibbins & the vacating Phil Bignall have all committed for the new season (?). With Josh and Richard Hodgeson away for tomorrows game and injuries to Jay Russell, Russ Best will select from a big squad and will field a couple of other quality trialists who we are hopeful of signing."

I think a few trips to Greenwich Avenue may be in the offing!!

Hucknall Town 4-0 Hucknall Rolls Leisure

Saturday 30th July PSF

Despite their well publicised plight, most of the Hucknall Town squad that Tommy Brookbanks had put together before the financial meltdown was announced, have stayed with the club.  Keeper James Lindley was unavailable for this game, but has turned down a lucrative move to stay at Watnall Road.

Loyal Yellows
The ground was bathed in bright sunshine as the game kicked off,  Evo-Stik South Division Town taking on their rivals from a few hundred yards down the road.

Rolls play in the Notts Senior League Senior Division, but are hoping to take the step back into the pyramid next season, after leaving the CML a couple of years ago.  The CML is once more an attractive proposition for Leisure - the travelling has been reduced significantly now the league is split into north and south divisions.

The game was fairly even for a while, but GRANT RYAN nipped between Richard Harrison and James Needham on 13, and delicately diverted the ball past Neil Waters in the Rolls goal.  Looks a real class player does Ryan, and although he may want to stay loyal to Town and to Tommy, teams are always looking for class strikers, and if one made the right offer, you never know......

1-0
CARL WESTCARR raced through on goal after 23 minutes after beating the offside trap - the pacy midfielder remained calm and deftly slotted past Waters to double the Yellows' advantage.

2-0
At the other end, Town keeper Damien Clark pulled off a great save from an Anthony Wallis effort, the recovered well to foil Kyle McDermott's follow up.  Wayne Duik made a great block with his backside soon after, but it was the home team who scored the next goal, this time GRANT RYAN converting from the spot after Westcarr had been tripped in the box by Harrison.

Duik blocks

Penalty!!

3-0

So 3-0 at the break, and whether the heat was to blame, or the usual multi-changes in personnel, but the second half left a lot to be desired.  Rolls had changed their 4,5,6,7 and 8 in the first half, whilst Town started the second half with all their named subs on the field.

Only one goal in the half - a cracking drive by JOEL GOODACRE, after some neat tricky wing play and a pin-point cross from Nick Ghislanzoni found him on the edge of the box.  Waters did well to get a hand to the shot, but it was so fiercely hit that he was unable to prevent it nestling in the back of the net. F-T 4-0

Yellows -- Westcarr, Ryan and Goodacre .. all on the mark

Blidworth Welfare 2-2 Gedling South Bank

Thursday 28th July 2011 -- PSF

Not the best game we'll see this pre-season, but a good workout for both teams.  CML South outfit Blidworth are still on a rebuilding excercise after the break up of last season's excellent squad.  I know little of NSL Senior team Gedling Southbank - we've only seen them a couple of times before, and of the squad of players present for this game, I knew only Mat MacKenzie and Westleigh Burke.

Not much to write about - the Referee had apparently a history in one of  the rugby codes, and didn't like being spoken back at.....he didn't seem to realise either that at this level, players are not the best in the world and will mis-time challenges, get kicked a lot and swear a lot!!

Me and my shadow!! Jamie Senior watched closely by Mat MacKenzie

The game was fairly even, but the home team had a chance to take the lead right on half-time when Jamie Senior was fouled in the Gedling box.  Unfortunately the former Sutton and Ollerton man could only strike the post with his spot-kick .. even more unfortunate was the fact that Kev had taken three consecutive pics of the miss!!! Ooops! H-T 0-0

Spent a good portion of the half in the company of our good friend Mark Frost. We were so pleased when he told us that his son has recovered from his recent illness - both Kev and I are parents and we both know the gut-wrenching feeling when your child is taken ill.....

South Bank went ahead on 48 when their no. 15, Tristan Rhodes, rose to glance a header past Alex Weston in the Welfare goal. Blidworth levelled on 70 through their no. 14 shirt "Dave", a simple tap in after a shot had been blocked on the line.

James Meehan scored the goal of the game for Bildworth on 84, cutting in from the left before drilling a curling effort past the GSB keeper.   The lead lasted barely 3 minutes though, as the visiting no.6 ( A.Trialist) was left alone in the area at a corner, and had the simple task of heading the ball home. F-T 2-2

Arnold Town 3-0 Heanor Town

Tuesday 26th July PSF

Heanor were a lot more "together" than they were at Pinxton on Friday last, but still failed to claim that elusive first pre-season win against a classy looking Arnold side.

Lions' Regular keeper Mark Frost had to pull out of the game for personal reasons - and his stand in was not really up to the mark (no pun intended).  He failed to clear for the first goal on 44, allowing ANTHONY GREGORY to nod home. H-T 1-0

Arnold keeper Lance Walker on the other hand made a couple of terrific stops - one diving effort to keep out Ashley Grayson's piledriver on 53 was really top class.  Arnold doubled their lead when a mix up in the Heanor defence gave their no.16, BEN MIDDLETON, a simple tap in from 8 yards.  The home team added their third on 65 when the Heanor keeper failed to hold a fairly tame drive, and MITCHELL SLAWSON tapped home from close range.

Nice to see Liam Garner in action again after 18 months out of the game. He had a great first half for the Eagles even though he admitted he was not fit and was suffering from a chest infection. F-T 3-0

Arnold already look a decent team, and we are due to be at Eagle Valley on August 6th to catch their first NCEL Premier Division league game of the season against Long Eaton United ....

Heanor have an extra week to prepare for their first EMCL league game, and although not playing as well as we know they can, they did show at times what they are capable of.

Carlton Town 2-0 Staveley MW

Saturday 23rd July PSF
Mr. Dennett looking very dapper!!

We were due to go to Kirkby Town v Askern Villa, but that was called off - our second choice was South Normanton Ath v Belper Town.  Kev told me he couldn't make a game today, and I didn't fancy going to Lees Lane on my own and being a real " Billy No-Mates" , so opted for Carlton Town v Staveley where I knew Brian Dennett and Trev Williams would be in attendance. As it happened blogger Rob "The Rambler" Campion was also present. Met Rob for the first time at the Pinxton/Heanor game - and after this second meeting in two days, our paths will probably not cross again all season!

The game itself was poor - Real "after the Lord Mayors Show" stuff. It was interesting to note that the players didn't line up and shake hands before kick off - interesting because all most of them wanted to do was to kick lumps out of each other.... can't see why - I don't think there is any previous history between these teams, but they certainly weren't very friendly towards each other!

First half action

Two second half strikes secured the win for the Millers. The first on 47 when Massiah McDonald ran down the right before cutting in and picking out ROB GILL who had the relatively simple task of steering the ball past the Staveley keeper.  RYAN GOWARD slammed home the second from 20+ yards on 73 - a real cracker that left the Staveley keeper grasping for thin air.  The Referee called a halt to proceedings a couple of minutes early as tempers really began to flare - what you could call a pre-season "not-so-friendly".   F-T 2-0

Second half action

Supposed to be going to Carlton v Eastwood on Tuesday.. may have a re-think..

Pinxton 4-1 Heanor Town

Friday 22nd July PSF

Pinxton
Wayne Cooke (6)  Ben Bacon (55) Craig Merritt (76) Ben Moore (86)

Heanor
Dan Williams 85

Went to this local derby game with high hopes that the teams would produce something special - as it happened CML PInxton outshone their EMCL neighbours from just down the A38. Some stunning performances from the home team, and some absloutely cracking goals. Heanor keeper  Mark Frost, also made three or four top class saves - and was arguably the Lions MOM.

After constant viewing of the motorway traffic cameras we decided we would risk junction 27 – 28  of the M1. There had been severe disruption to the traffic flow caused by an accident between 28 and 29  We could have played safe and headed to Pinxton  through Selston,  but as Kev swung onto the slip road, the carriageway looked as though it was running as per normal for a Friday evening.

As we approached J28 it was obvious the traffic was coming to a grinding halt, but luckily for us, it only ground to a halt just after the exit slip road !!

Expected a decent turn out tonight and we weren’t disappointed …not sure of numbers, but I reckon 70-80 were in attendance.

Heanor striker Dan Williams stopped warming up to have a chat to us as we walked past, then we met up with our stalker, Brian Dennett!  He has a new nickname now – he’s gone from “ Evening Post” and “Albert” ( Steptoe) and “Big Issue”, to  Brian “ You’re Barred! “ Dennett.  Not going into details in order to respect his privacy, but after an innocent incident at a club no too far away from Pinxton, he is apparently no longer welcome there!!

We stood between the dugouts and had a chat with Heanor bosses Glenn Kirkwood and  Craig Hopkins – they have kept most of last season’s squad, but admit that they are struggling to fitness at the moment.

On this showing it appears Pinxton aren’t struggling for fitness – the looked sharp from the off, and were ahead with only 6 minutes on the clock.  Great build up play ended with the ball dropping kindly to WAYNE COOKE some 20 yards from goal,  and the makeshift left-back volleyed home superbly, giving Frost no chance.

Frost kept out a superb strike from Kieran Debrower after 25 minutes, then could only watch as the ball sail past him on 32 – luckily for Heanor,  Ben Bacon’s bullet shot crashed off the angle of bar and post and away to safety.  H-T 1-0

We had been joined at this time by fellow bloggist “ The Rambler”.    His “All Roads Lead Somewhere” blog is always well worth a read.  This season he is raising money for LOROS, Hospice care in Leics and Rutland – I wish him all the best, and hope he can notch up loads and loads of goals!!

Pinxton came out for the second half still buzzing from their first half performance, and BEN BACON put them further ahead with just 10 minutes of the second period played, latching onto a pin-point through ball from Debrower, before going around Frost to prod home.

On 76, The move of the game saw the home team increase their lead. I lost count of the passes made as the home team probed the Heanor back line, but I reckon a good dozen or so were completed before the ball reached Moran out on the right. The diminutive midfielder’s cross was straight onto the head of striker CRAIG MERRITT, and once again Frost was beaten, but once again, he had no chance….

In the 85th minute, DAN WILLIAMS prodded home from close range as Pinxton relaxed too much at the back, but the gap was back to three within seconds of the restart, when BEN MOORE unleashed a terrific effort from 20 yards out that was past  Frost before he could react. Stunner, absolute stunner!  F-T 4-1

I know you can never read too much into pre-season friendlies, and the results don’t really count for anything, but I was a privilege to be at the Welfare Ground for this game.  Heanor can only get better – they have the players – but if Pinxton get any better, the CML South Division had better watch out!!

The evening was almost spoiled as on the way back to the M1, some loony tune decided to pull out of a turning almost wiping us out....bloody idiot.

Blidworth Welfare 3-2 Bulwell FC

Thursday 21st July PSF

CMFL South Division v NSL Senior Division

Went to Blidworth hoping to catch up with Dave Bramwell, but apparently he's no longer at Blidworth!

Add to this that the friendly was to be 3 x 30 minutes (a format that I can't get my head round) and we had club linesmen, I thought this evening was going to be something of a waste of time and effort.

But, as usual, I was proved wrong and I ended up in some good company and saw 5 goals - so all in all not too bad a night......

Both teams have changed dramatically over the closed season. Most of Blidworth's players have departed for pastures new. Manager Brett Marshall and Chairman Alan Whitworth also left the club leaving it slightly in the doldrums. However, they seem to have recruited well and gave a very strong Bulwell side a good game.  Bulwell have also seen wholesale changes - with most of the Arnold Cross Keys Sunday team now signed - along with the Cross Keys management team.

The scoring went as follows:

1st period
Bulwell -- 9 minutes Connor Carter header from a right wing cross

2nd period
11 minute Blidworth no. 5 Kyle Clarkeson tap in from close range
14 minutes Carter grabs his second
20 minutes Kyle Clarkeson again for Blidworth -  another tap in

3rd period
28th minute penalty converted for Blidworth by Meeham

Pinxton 1-3 Teversal

Nice evening out at Pinxton - a chance to see two of our favourite teams take each other on...

Teversal play at a higher level than Pinxton, and were favourites to win -  and with Pinxton only at half strength the outcome was somewhat inevitable. Missing, that I can think of were : Jay Cooper, Kieron Debrower, Jamie Renshaw, Ben Newman, Fraser Thomas, Joe Riley, Arron Brady ...

COLIN COCKERILL netted the first for Tevie after just 4 minutes had been played, a superbly placed side-foot shot that from 25 yards that flew past the home keeper.  Pinxton were level on 29 when CRAIG MERRITT (?) latched onto a neat through ball and with the outside of his foot sent the ball past the outstretched arms of keeper Scott Thompson.  H-T 1-1

COCKERILL was on the score sheet again on 50 after his 40 yard free-kick was allowed to go all the way into the net after the PInxton centre-back misjudged the balls flight.  COCKERILL completed his hat-trick 4 minutes later, converting a spot kick after the Referee saw a push in the box.  F-T 1-3

Parkgate 4-1 Staveley MW

Saturday 16th July - Teversal tournament final.

Great game to end Teversal's Inaugural Pre-Season tournament. A bit feisty at times, but nothing that Referee Glenn Turner couldn't handle.

Well done Ref!
When we left Hucknall at 2:25 pm it was pittling it down, but when we entered Stanton Hill, the roads were dry, and as we pulled into the Tevie car park, the place was bathed in glorious sunshine......

Parkgate began this game as clear favourites - Staveley also had a team playing at home to Heanor (they drew 3-3), so their line up was a mix of ressies and U19. Having said that, these were the players who won through to the final, so were there on merit.

Parkgate opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and it was prolific striker NATHAN FORBES-SWINDELLS who stabbed the ball home from 8 yards after it fell kindly to his feet.

Forbes nets the first goal of the game

The goal didn't appear to phase Staveley too much, and they applied a lot of pressure to try and haul themselves back into the game.

The pressure paid dividends on 34 – SHAUN TUTON closed down Parkgate keeper Aaron Chapman as he was about to clear his area, and this panicked the tall stopper who smashed his intended clearance against the striker. The loose ball flew towards the goal, and Tuton was quick enough to get to it first and prod home from close range. H-T 1-1

Down came the rain – but not for long! We sheltered in the clubhouse during the break, and as the teams came out we hurried to the main stand to seek more shelter.  The rain soon abated and much of  the second period was played in bright sunshine.

From the restart, it took Parkgate just two minutes to regain the lead. MOM Danny Cardwell fired in a free-kick from the left that was met by big WILL SENIOR, the centre half and skipper rising like a salmon to power home a bullet header.

Will Senior (armband) netted the Parkgate second
On 63, one of the Parkgate coaching staff got the ball “rate in t’ knackers” as he watched from the technical area.  No-one laughed – honest!!!

Should have sat in the dugout!!!
Parkgate went further ahead on 78 – another powerful header from a left wing cross, this time DANNY MAJOR leaping to beat the defenders.

Wait for it

Wait for it!!!!

Get in there

It was all over as a contest, but Parkgate kept going forward and added their fourth with just three minutes to go. After neat play down the right,  Senior played the ball back to Cardwell who curled a beauty to the far post where JORDAN TURNER was on hand to volley home.  F-T 4-1

Turner adds no. 4

We stayed for the presentation -  unusually for us.  We wanted to see the trophies, but more than anything wanted Will Senior to confirm he had scored the second goal – there was a little bit of confusion as Kev Newton  had announced that Craig Laight had scored – even though he wasn’t on the pitch at the time….!

Apart from that, I have to congratulate everyone at Teversal for putting on such a well organised tournament. Also, big thanks to the teams that took part. I saw 5 of the 9 games and enjoyed each one thoroughly.

Stags 1-2 Pies

Friday 15th July 2011 -- PSF

I know that pre-season games are not supposed to be taken too seriously, but someone should have tried telling these players.  Nasty tackles, bad sportsmanship, even a suspected broken ankle? Local derby, passion - ok, but come on, this was a "friendly" although sadly, by name only.

Both teams were less than entertaining throughout the game - Connors goal was well taken, but Smith's penalty was poor - and some defensive lapses gave away the Pies' goals.

Can Stags fans take anything from the game? I don't think so. Lindon Meikle had a decent game - played for 87 minutes - Adam Murray played ok - but they made so many changes ... goodness gracious me - Coxy changed 9 players ( I think).  God only knows how many the Pies changed!  All in all a poor game, by any standards.  Was with Rob Waite (again!) and Mick Cook - I'd have hated watching that on my own - at least I had someone to talk to !!

Missed penalty ( Adam Smith 22)
Connor goal (26)

Hucknall Town 0-2 Retford United

Thursday 14th July PSF

Brett Marshall's north Notts outfit added more woes to troubled Town - and although the game was not the greatest ( to say the least), it was great to meet up with Rob Waite again ( we've seen more of each other so far this season than we did the whole of the last campaign), Adam Barlow, Brian Dennett (inevitably)  and Danny Staley.  Had a chat to Brett before kick-off - he seems very upbeat abut the coming season, and looking at how his NCEL Premier team got the better of their Evo-Stik opponents, you can see why.

Not too much to write about - the first goal in the 14th minute from NATHAN MILLINGTON, was a scuffed volley that left Hucknall keeper James Lindley flat footed and rooted to the spot - the second in the 76th minute was a superb solo effort from BRADLEY WELLS - a strong run down the left, a cut into the box and a shot across Lindley into the net. F-T 0-2

Hucknall's plight is now well known - the have announced they have no money to pay players or management - and if some of the players on show tonight decide to up sticks, they will surely be strong favourites for the drop......

Admission £5

Attendance - not many - and when Town's plight has been so well aired and a decent turn out would have put a few extra bob in the pot, the Hucknall public still stayed away.

Rob Waite will do a much better report on his the66pow blog...  this was probably one game too many for me this week... creative juices are not flowing at all !!

Hucknall Town statement

Club Statement 13th July 2011
The club can confirm that the offer made to HMRC has been rejected. The club is putting in place plans to pay its tax debts in full. At a meeting held on Monday 11th July, budgets were presented to the committee which clearly illustrated that there would be no budget available to pay salaries to either players, coaches or the football manager.

The decision was made to operate as an amateur football club for the forthcoming football season in order to secure the long term survival of the club. Investors were informed of the news at a meeting held last night; none of the investors that attended the meeting withdrew their support for the share sale scheme. Any shortfall in funds needed to pay the remainder of the tax bill will come from surplus funds generated by the social club, sponsorship, gate receipts and other events that would have otherwise generated the football budget.

Tommy Brookbank’s and his team are being given time to consider their position and to talk to the squad they have assembled during the closed season with a decision expected from them by Thursday as to whether or not they feel they are able to continue in their roles. The club will compete in the Evostik South League in 2011/2012 season and the pre-season friendly against Retford on Thursday 14th July will go ahead K.O. 7:45pm.

Belper Town 0-2 Parkgate

Wednesday 13th July -- Teversal tournament "semi-final"

What a pleasant evening!  Great weather, great company and some fantastic banter!! Staffordshire hopper Chris Bedford was present, as was the inimitable Rob Waite.  This was Chris's first visit to Carnarvon Street. I'll look forward to reading both Rob and Chris's  thoughts on tonight's game...

Brian "Big Issue" Dennett was in attendance again, as was Scarborough boss Rudi funk and Scarborough midfield player Joe Naylor. Said hi to Belper Town photographer Tim Harrison and Blackwell MW director of football Paul McFarland.

Name checks over - although I'd like to give Teversal stalwarts Kev Newton and Keith Parnill a quick mention - they are always on hand for a chat and always make us welcome.

On paper at least, Belper were favourites. Evo-Stik Div 1 v NCEL Premier - should have been - but Parkgate had other ideas and were aguably the better team throughout the 90 minutes.

The Rotherham outfit outplayed their Derbyshire opponents in all departments - but were a tad lucky with their opener!  Danny Cardwell's corner from the left looked a poor effort, and the player shouted " that was effin awful"- but when the ball was met on the volley, on the edge of the box by Adam Shepherd, all of a sudden it didn't look so bad after all.  When Shepherd's volley was cleared off the line by Aaron Pride it cannoned off MATT BLAKE and flew into the net. What a glorious OG.... !!

Referee Stu Richardson had a good game in the middle, although the penalty he awarded to Belper on 34 for handball looked a little harsh.  No matter - Adam Walker's spot kick was not the best effort you'll ever see and Jenkinson dived to his left to push away.

CARDWELL added the only other goal of the game in the 41st minute, drilling across Andy Richmond from the corner of the box after he was played in by Keir Hannity.      H-T 0-2

Kev had a cuppa at half-time -- waxing lyrical over the brew..mind you, the chip cob he'd bought earlier also received his seal of approval, although it didn't seem to last very long!!

Always great to have words with Mr. Waite about all things Yerkshire -  but one thing we have to agree on is that Rob in Da Hood is from Nottinghamshire - never mind naming an obscure Yerkshire airport after the legendary character  - the proof is below!!!  Rob In Da Hood is alive and well in and was spotted in Teversal, situated in Gods' glorious county - Nottinghamshire!!

Rob in Da Hood

No notes were taken during the second half -  I was enjoying the banter far more than the game.  Belper's rather lack-lustre performance and their inabilty to break down Parkgate's defence made the outcome inevitable -- so we have NCEL Prem v NCEL Prem in the final........not ideal for clubs in the same division to play each other pre-season - but this is a final and the silverware and medals are their to be won... F-T 0-2
