Ilkeston U19 1-1 Pinxton U19 ( Mini Shield)

Wednesday 31st August 2011 -- kick off 7:45pm

Ilkeston are new to the Baris North Midlands U19 league, and it certainly showed as far as the organisation went.  £2 car park?  No programme? No tannoy. No team sheet.......you have to take my word that I was at the New Manor Ground -- although I did check in at Coronation Park to check the game HAD actually been switched from there.

Up until a couple of days ago, the Ilkeston U19 were going to play at Eastwood, but that deal fell through.  So I turned into the car park at the NMG to be greeted by a sign "Car Park £2" ....... I turned straight around and parked on the street for nowt.

Paid my £2 to get in and asked for a couple of programmes only to be told "we don't do one for U19 games"..... well, as far as I know they should, and also as far as I know, they may be fined for not doing so.

Watched the game in the company of Tony Squires, and met up with Pinxton's Glenn Clarence and Ed Byrne.  "Wheelchair" Trev Williams appeared towards the end of the game, and informed me that his mum passed away last week after a very lengthy illness. Condolences Trev.....

The first half ended 0-0, but there were plenty of chances, mostly to the home team who didn't seem to want to put the ball in the onion bag for some reason or other....

Pinxton went in front on 68, their no. 6 GREGG MARRIOT smashing a beauty past the home keeper from 25 yards ..... the keeper was only about 5 yards off his line, but had absolutely no chance of stopping the ball as it sailed over his head and into the back of the net.

With 60 seconds left on the clock, and after some heroic Pinxton defending, the home team levelled through LIAM WOODWARD wearing their no 10 shirt.  He carved his way past three players before slotting home from 15 yards. F-T 1-1

Honours even - no idea how the Mini Shield works, but I will be going to see more Academy level football - the F.A. Youth cup and Baris League......but probably not at the NMG.

Admission £2
Programme - none produced
Car Park £2 - no thanks
Coffee £1 - no thanks
Attendance H/C 75

Ilkeston -- this is U19 football - everywhere else it's £2 to get in,  free programme,  free parking. At the moment I can't see me making many visits to watch Ilkeston U19 during the coming season...

Linby CW 3-1 Awsworth Villa (NSL Senior)

Tuesday 30th August 2011 -- kick off 6:30pm

Our first visit of the season to Church Lane.  Over the past few years, Welfare have been languishing in the lower reaches of the NSL Senior Division - indeed last season they finished bottom, and only survived relegation due to the fact that a host of clubs deserted the league to play in the CML.

Different tale under the management team of  Dave Bradshaw and Dave Marlow - they have now won all four of their matches this season.  The good folk of Hucknall and Linby are certainly taking notice, I head counted 70 persons present pitchside - a bit different from last term when the crowd compised "one man and his dog"!!!!

Villa looked a very capable outfit, with former Long Eaton defender Adam Holmes and ex-Gedling MW striker Chris Henson in their ranks, but Linby have also recruited well, and  with  Scott Miles, Ashley Winfield,  Matt Peberday and Dave Marlowe himself in their squad,  they should not struggle at this level.

They did struggle to begin with, and went behind on 22 when the Villa no. 11, JACK SMITH, was allowed to race through the back line and hammer the ball past Miles.

Linby had a chance to level two minutes later when Damian Mann was tripped in the box.  Awsworth keeper Jake Watson save the initial spot kick, but  the Assistant Referee adjudged that he had strayed off his line and the kick was retaken.  Watson again saved the spot kick, but this time was deemed to have saved the effort legally. Looking at the pics, I can't see any difference in position when the kicks are actually saved....... H-T 0-1

Double click to super size!!

Watson off his line to save

Watson saves again -- off his line again - apparently not??

Welfare were back in the game 6 minutes into the second half - which was the really the 46th minute as the game was played over 2 x 40 minute periods (?)... ASHLEY WINFIELD was on hand at the edge of the box to steer past Watson after the Villa defence failed to clear a free-kick from the right.

5 minutes later the home team took the lead - DAMIAN MANN getting the better of his marker before firing home from 18 yards.  Looks like he couldn't knock the proverbial skin off a rice pudding, but he was stronger and more determined than the defender.  MANN grabbed Welfare's third on 55 - again beating a defender to the ball , but this time the finish across Watson from an really tight angle was superb - the keeper never smelled it, as they say.......

2 goal Damian Mann
Not a lot to mention after that goal went in, it was getting dark and it was a question of the game finishing whilst it was still light enough to see the ball!! F-T 3-1

Better than our previous two games - but I couldn't pick three bad 'uns on the trot, could I ???

No admission or programme

Clipstone Welfare 3-1 Ollerton Town (CMLN)

Monday 29th August 2011 :  3pm kick off

A bit of a revolution has taken place at Clipstone since the last time we paid a visit. The team now has former Forest Town boss Gary Castledine in charge, and he has managed to persuade half a dozen or so of his Foggo team to sign for him.  Keeper Steve Boot, Mark Carter, Danny Tighe, James McCann, Mark Robinson and Mick Taylor were all in the squad for this game.

Former Pinxton full-back Ben Newman requested that we get to the Lido sometime during the season, and this game against Paul Rawdon's Ollerton Town seemed a fair choice.  As it happens, it was one of the poorer games we have seen this season so far - much on a par with Saturday's Long Eaton/Retford effort.

Arrived at the ground with ten minutes to spare  - no programmes left, so resorted to taking a picture of Clippo defender Lee Bowler's dad's copy......

Sat with Dave Bramwell for while, then changed position to allow "clicker" Kev to get some pics. .. we were then joined by James Robinson, a well known Assistant Referee in CML circles.

The game began at a frantic pace -- with the ball being treated like a "ot tater". Castledine and Tighe in the heart of the home midfield were guilty at times of failing to pick out passes and trying too much pretty-pretty football, but when they  did manage to get the ball forward they did look dangerous.

Clipstone went in front on 20.  The Ref awarded what appeared a soft free-kick 22 yards from goal and when Tighe curled the ball over the wall it was saved by the keeper at the foot of the post.  MARK CARTER was quickest to react and slammed the loose ball into the net before the Town defenders could react.

Another free kick from more or less the same spot was converted superbly by DANNY TIGHE in the 40th minute, then in injury time it was Ollerton's turn to take advantage of a set-piece. When the free-kick was fired over the wall, Welfare keeper Steve Boot decided to make a save for the camera, but instead of palming the ball wide he laid it at the feet of  LIAM BEST who gratefully blasted home. H-T 2-1

Get in !!!

One for the camera - but Best (in red) is ready to pounce!!!

The second half was marginally better than the first, though highlights were few and far between.  Ollerton never really troubled the home defence overmuch, and I think Rawds will find this a long, hard season. Mind you, he has spells at Radford and Kimberley on his resume, so he will be well used to fighting for victories!

Another Tighe free-kick on the hour lead to the final goal of the contest ...this time the ball was swung in from the left and SAM BAILEY was left unmarked at the near post to head home. Poor defending, but another sweet set-piece from Tighe.

Finished 3-1 to Clipstone, but it may well be a while before we decide to visit the Lido again....

Long Eaton United 0-1 Retford United (NCELP)

Saturday 27th August 2011

It was great to see Retford Manager Brett Marshall in action again, a pleasure to be in the company of Scarborough Athletic Manager Rudy Funk for the first half, and a real treat to have a lengthy chat with Long Eaton player Kelvin Mushambi during the break.

They were the highlights of an afternoon at Grange Park - the game itself excelled in tedium for the most part, and only a 90th minute penalty saved us from notching up another 0-0 draw.

Rudy was at the game to watch his Bank Holiday opponents - and in all honesty, having already seen Scarborough play, the Derbyshire side ought to be put to the sword at Queensgate on Monday.
Long Eaton : Whalin, Webster, Gamble, Carder, Whiley (c), Breach, Arnstrong, Martin, King, Mellors-Blair, Bowles. Subs: Rickford, Hunter, Ganderson, Mushambi, Webb (GK)

Badgers: Fisher, Corrigan, Baugh, Hayes, Nightingale, Payne, Chambers, Chappell,  Brown,  Hatfield,  Owens. Subs : Scott, Pride, Wells, Smith, Howard
Half-time summary - after the teams had performed the usual ritual handshake, they then ran around for 45 minutes.  H-T 0-0
Decided to go and interupt "Mushy" while he was half-way through his half-time exercises, and although he is still enjoying life at Long Eaton, he is finding that at 35, it's becoming more of a labour of love rather than a pleasure.  Nice boots though, Kelvin!!

Still works full-time, has a boozer in Town and still finds time to train and play - busy, busy, busy............

The second half saw a marked improvement, and on the hour, I actually took out the note pad!  Well worth noting the free-kick from Paul Gamble that flew just past Fisher's right-hand post.
Retford had a chance to break the deadlock soon after when Brad Wells fired a cross in from the right that was met by Adam Scott, but luckily for the home team, Ross Whalin was well placed to save.

On 72, Shaun Rickford missed a sitter - left alone in the Retford area he was picked out by superbly by Martin Bowles, but contrived to head wide when he should have buried it.

Great sequence of shots from Mr. Goodman !! Click to enlarge - unless you are Shaun Rickford......don't look, Shaun!!!
Not wanting to ruin Rickford's day, but the next sequence of pics is of the away team's winning penalty taken by ADAM SCOTT in the 90th minute!!
So, we didn't see a great game, we didn't see a hat full of goals, but at least we didn't get the dreaded 0-0 draw. In all fairness, the home team did deserve something from the game, but it wasn't to be.

Pinxton 7-0 Bulwell Town (CML South)

This was a fairly under-strength home team, but they still had way too much for their opponents.  They welcomed back Josh Parker, but still no Ben Bacon or Joe Riley, and Gerry Moran, Jamie Renshaw, Fraser Thomas were also all absent.

We saw Bulwell on a couple of occasions last term, and they looked a competent outfit, but they didn't really meet anyone with the pace and power of this Pinxton line-up, and to be fair their cause wasn't helped with two sendings off.

Pinxton : O'Hare, Parker, Jones, Senior, Collins, Rawson, Moore, Debrouwer, Merrett, Cooper, Cooke.  Rory Davis replaced Merrett early in the second half and Sean Connor entered the fray later on, replacing Liam Collins.

Shake -- all friendly before kick off- it wasn't to last!!
KIERAN DEBROUWER opened the scoring with just 4 minutes on the clock, his powerful free-kick from 20 yards deflecting off the wall and flying past the helpless Alex Smith in the Bulwell goal.

The visitors played some neat football at times, and the antics of their no. 2, Justin Edwards Clarke gave us a smile or two - especially when one of his tricky pieces of footwork left James Senior for dead....

The home faithful had to wait until the 27th minute for the second goal, and it came form BEN MOORE who calmly lifted the ball just out of the reach of Smith after he was played in by a superb ball from Wayne Cooke.

Then the game turned a little ugly - keeper Smith deliberately tripped Cooke as he was running away from the goal, giving Referee Luke Gumley little option but to send of the stopper and award a penalty.  Whenever I have seen Smith play, he is usually so well mannered, but he lost his head this time, and left the field letting us know in no uncertain terms how he felt!!  DEBROUWER powered home from the spot, giving the stand in keeper no chance. H-T 3-0

4 goals for the skipper
Pinxton added their fourth in the 58th minute, and what a goal it was.  Ben Moore collected the ball out wide on the left, and cut in across the edge of the 18 yard box before laying the perfect ball to DEBROUWER who elegantly and with much precision, side-footed the ball home to complete his hat-trick.  Great finish - and don't be fooled into thinking the keeper was just  a stand-in - the ball was so well placed, two keepers wouldn't have saved it!!

On 65 came the next unsavoury incident.  Josh Parker went down in a heap - and although I didn't see the incident, the linesman was only a few yards away - and after a word with Mr. Gumley, the Bulwell 12 shirt was shown a straight red.  Well - he saw red alright -- the red mist! He went loopy - and charged up the field looking to have a go at Parker - luckily his team mates were able to stop his advance! I dread to think what would have happened if he'd have actually got to Parker - the Pinxton boys are a very tight-knit outfit and the "all for one, one for all" spirit is always there to be seen.......

Back to the football - and back to the goals.   JAY COOPER received the ball on the corner of the box, and unleashed a bullet that was past the keeper before he could move.  Again - a shot that would have beat most keepers - never mind an outfield player with the keepers' shirt on!

ELLIOTT JONES was the next name on the score sheet - delicately steering the ball home after being picked out superbly by Debrouwer.  Jones is a little gem - I reckon Pinxton will struggle to hold on to the young defender....

DEBROUWER added to his personal tally with four minutes to play - springing the off-side trap and racing into the area before slotting home.  F-T 7-0

Gedling MW 0-0 Louth Town (F.A. Cup)

Saturday 20th August 2011

F.A. Cup day.  I selected this game when the draw was made, little knowing then that Gedling would lose the majority of last season's squad and would start this game with a team having an average age of about 12 !!  Mind you, Louth's starting eleven didn't look much older!!!

Must add a quick "get well soon" to gateman Alan Jennings who appeared to have suffered a minor stroke as the game kicked off.  Full marks to the Notts ambulance service - arrived within10 minutes of being called.

With both the teams  being on the young side, it was expected that the game wouldn't be played at a sedate pace, and it certainly wasn't, although at times it reminded me of days gone by when I was involved in youth football - all chase and little skill or tactical awareness.

Louth's skipper Carl Martin had arguably the best chance of the first half, heading wide from a corner when it looked easier to score.  Kieran Wells had a half chance at the other end, but scuffed his shot from close range. H-T 0-0

The first half wasn't good, but the right from the restart, the home team went knocking on the Town door. In the 50th minute, Wells steered the ball past Craig Wherry, only to see it come back off the post and bounce to safety, when it looked a goal all the way.  On 65, when Wells headed against the other post from a well taken free-kick,  the visitors seemed to wake up and took the game to their hosts.  Jamie Coulson met Danny Warvill's neat cross with an acrobatic overhead effort after 68 minutes, then seconds later Miners' keeper Rhys Watkinson did well to tip Andy Willoughby's header onto the bar.

Then the game died a death - and they have to do it all again on Tuesday night. Glad I'm not going!!!!

Pinxton 1-1 Notts Police (CML South)

Another  visit to Pinxton, and why not.  Always treated like friends at Wharf Road, so revisits are never a problem.

Nottm Police are new to the CML this season - last season they finished next to bottom in the NSL Senior Division with a playing record that lead many, including  yours truly, that they would be cannon-fodder in the CML :

P30 W6 D1 L23 F37 A96 Diff -59 Pts 19

From the off though, it was apparent this was not going to be a cake-walk for free-scoring Pinxton. Their visitors looked well organised at the back, and with Blair Anderson running the home defence ragged, it was no surprise when the Bobbies took the lead after just 13 minutes had been played.

The goal was a classic set-piece, although the home defence should have reacted a little quicker than they did when a corner from the left was headed back across the goal, to where centre-half LUKE PARFITT was left with so much space and time that he really couldn't fail to convert with a simple tap in from 8 yards out.  The Police almost went two up on 36,  only desperate last ditch defending saved keeper Dave O'Hare's blushes after he failed to hold onto a cross at his far post.

There were plenty of meaty challenges from both teams, and although young Referee Kristian Silcock was berated continuously, he got most decisions right, and did well to keep his head when some of the players and officials were losing theirs.  H-T 0-1

The home team were on terms within five minutes of the restart, CRAIG MERRETT nipping in between two defenders to stab home Kieren Debrouwer's low near post ball.  Wayne Cooke had a header cleared off the line in the 65th minute as PInxton piled on the pressure - the visitors held on though, and took a well deserved point from a game in which they were expected to get well beaten. Pinxton 6-2 Real United (CML South)

Saturday 13th August 2011.

Real United are one of the new members of the CMFL - they were playing in the NAA Premier division last term and neither of us knew much about them.  Their first game of the new season looked a bit of a toughie, Pinxton finished third in the CML Supreme Div last season and are one of the favourites for the title, and are usually very hard to beat at the Welfare Ground.

Pinxton were without Ben Bacon, Aaron Brady and  Joe Riley, but their strength in depth meant they still started with a very strong eleven, with Jamie Renshaw, Ben Moore and Jay Cooper on the bench.

We didn't recognise too many of the United players, in fact only Mark Clifford and Nev Silcock were known to us!!  Clifford lead the United back line well enough, and Pinxton only got hold of this game after he was forced off with an injury midway through the second period.

James Senior tried his luck from 30 yards in the fifth minute - the effort though flew just wide.   Wayne Cooke played in Keiran Debrouwer a  couple of minutes later,  but after beating two defenders, "Keano" fired just wide of the upright.

Chances were being created all the time by the home team, Cooke saw his flick header from a Senior free-kick fly wide, then the same player headed over from a Debrouwer free-kick. All the Pinxton pressure paid off in the 13th minute - another Debrouwer free-kick from the right headed powerfully home by CRAIG MERRETT.

Merrett heads home

Cooke headed wide again on 20, again from a Senior free-kick, but the Pinxton no.7 was to blame for the visitors' equaliser in the 23rd minute, his attempt at a pass back to Dave O'Hare was intercepted by AARON " Scratchy" JAMES, and the striker had the simple task of guiding the ball into the net from 15 yards out.

James levels
United almost took the lead seconds later when Garry Spriggs headed a Peppe Leder corner just over.  They did take the lead with three to play in the first half.  Leder's corner found James, and the no. 10 calmly laid the ball into the path of GARRY SPRIGGS who fired powerfully home from 8 yards.  H-T 1-2

Spriggs fires United ahead
The home team looked slightly stunned as they trooped off the field at half-time, but having created ten really decent chances in the half, they must have felt they had enough in their locker to get back into the game.

It took just two minutes for Pinxton to draw level, Senior's cross met by JOSH PARKER, the full back stooping low to head home.  Marcus Buck had a chance on 52 to bring United level, but he poked the ball wide after finding himself one-on-one with O'Hare.

Parker levels for Pinxton
Senior had the ball in the net soon after, but was adjudged to have been offside. At the other end James had a go from 20 yards after 57 minutes and was unlucky as his shot ricocheted off the post with O'Hare well beaten.

Pinxton then made three changes - and this proved too much for the visitors. Obviously not used to the pace of the CML, the last thing they needed was three pairs of fresh legs coming on!   Under siege, United managed to hold the now rampaging home team at bay for 15 minutes or so. Shots from Debrouwer and Cooper were wide of the target, but when BEN MOORE  tried his luck from 20 yards the unfortunate keeper, having got to the ball, allowed it to roll out of his hands and trickle into the net.

Senior picked out Parker from a corner on 80, and the no. 2 fired the ball to the far post where ELLIOTT JONES rose like a salmon to power home a superb header.  ELLIOTT JONES added the fifth for Pinxton straight after, a cracking ball into the 6 yard box by Debrouwer finished well by the left-back.  It was six with two to play, again Debrouwer the creator - his ball across the goal prodded home by the sliding JAY COOPER.  F-T 6-2

Jones heads powerfully home
Cooper adds the sixth
A bit of a scare initially for Pinxton, but they created enough chances to have won by a greater margin.  Real United didn't need this as their first game at this higher level, but they will learn from this defeat and take heart that they gave one of the divisions top teams a good test.

Teversal 3-1 Hallam ( NCEL Cup)

Tuesday 9th August 2011

With Kev doing something called "DIY", I was left to travel to the Grange on my own ... met up with Spirite hopper Chris Marsh and Brian "Big Issue" Dennett inside the ground. What started off as a balmy August evening ended up a bit on the chilly side......glad for the sweat shirt and fleece -- some brave, hardy souls had just t-shirts and those short, shrunken trousers on ..... not warm enough for that apparel tonight -- bless !!!

Ryan Atkins had the first real chance of the game on 11 minutes, but after great work to create a shooting opportunity, the young man fired hopelessly wide of Lewis Naylor's goal from 12 yards out.

A series of corners for the home team culminated in the games first goal on 16.  Colin Cockerill fired the corner in from the left and DANNY SWALES met the ball with a bullet header that gave Naylor no chance.

Teversal doubled their advantage after 34 minutes, when Ryan Atkins robbed an advancing defender and raced towards the Hallam goal line. He managed to pick out ROB COLLINS in the 6 yard box, and the no. 9 just managed to slide in and bundle the ball home. H-T 2-0

Shake
Kick off

Hallam made two changes at the break, Julian Lawrence and Danny Wiltshire replacing Matt Holmes and Leigh Warriner, and immediately looked a more settled side. They attacked relentlessly, but the Tevie defence stood firm, and keeper Jonno Wilson was in great form, catching everything that was fired into the area.

16 year old DANNY WILSON entered the game on 75, and the Academy player grabbed the third goal for the home team with just a couple of minutes to play.  After great work by Mark Robinson, who picked out Wilson superbly, the youngster showed great composure and no little ability in lifting the ball over Naylor from 12 yards out.

Hallam grabbed a consolation on 90, DANNY WILTSHIRE chipping Wilson, but it was too little to late for the Yorkshire outfit, and Teversal advance to the next round of the competition. F-T 3-1
